How old do you have to be to go to a casino in the United States? There is no single federal age for all gambling. States set statutes for commercial casinos, lotteries and sports betting. Federally recognised tribes set floor rules under tribal-state compacts. Online casino and sportsbook ages follow the state that licensed the product.
Last verified: 31 August 2026. This page cites official or primary sources we could open this pass. It is not a 50-state statute table. Affiliate blogs that list every state are not official sources; we do not copy them. Check the venue door, the tribal compact, and your state gaming commission (the American Gaming Association State of Play map is a living industry overview — still confirm the statute).
This is educational, not legal advice. Rehanak is not a US regulator. Most brands we review are licensed outside US state iGaming (see the US hub).

The five products people mix together
| Product | Who sets the age | Pattern (not a promise for your town) |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial casino (state-licensed floor) | State statute + house policy | Commonly 21 to wager; alcohol service is a frequent reason |
| Tribal casino | Tribe + compact | Some floors 18, some 21; alcohol areas may be 21 when the rest is 18 |
| Online casino / iGaming | State that licensed the site | Where it exists, 21 is the usual operator and statute pattern — verify that state |
| Sports betting (retail or app) | State | Often 21; some statutes differ from lottery |
| Lottery, many charitable bingo, some pari-mutuel | State lottery law | Often 18 in the same state that requires 21 on a casino floor |
A sweepstakes or social-casino app is not a state-licensed casino. Age gates there are terms of service, not a Nevada licence.
Nevada (primary source)
Nevada Revised Statutes 463.350 (Licensing and Control of Gaming) prohibits a person under 21 from playing or placing wagers on a licensed gambling game, slot machine, race book, sports pool or pari-mutuel operator, and from loitering in a room where that gaming is conducted. Employment rules and exceptions are in the same section.
That is the statute for licensed Nevada gaming, not a summary of every US state.
What we are not publishing this pass
A complete 50-state grid from secondary websites. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and other iGaming states need their own commission or statute pages before we fill a cell. Until those official pages are checked, treat any “21 everywhere online” line as a pattern, not a citation.
Blocker for a full table: we did not retrieve every state gaming-commission FAQ in this update. Use:
- Your state lottery site for scratchers and draws
- The commercial casino regulator (DGE, NGCB, etc.) for floors
- The tribal casino’s posted policy for that building
- The licensed sportsbook’s geofenced terms for apps
Online and “going to a casino” from another state
A Curaçao or Tobique website that accepts a US card is not “how old to go to a Las Vegas casino.” Age on an offshore cashier is the operator’s T&Cs plus your local law. The US hub separates crypto, sweepstakes and real-money iGaming.
House policy can be stricter than the statute
A venue can require 21 even if a compact allows 18, especially where alcohol is served on the floor. The door policy you are actually standing in front of wins.
Short questions
Q: How old to go to a casino in the US?
A: It depends on the building and the product. Many commercial casinos require 21 to wager. Nevada licensed gaming is 21 under NRS 463.350. Lottery tickets in the same country are often 18. Tribal floors follow the compact. There is no one federal age.
Q: Can you gamble at 18 in the United States?
A: Sometimes, on some products (lottery, some tribal floors, some pari-mutuel). That does not let you play a 21+ Nevada pit. Check the specific statute and the door.
Q: Is online casino 21 in every US state?
A: Only where online casino is licensed at all — and then you must read that state’s law and the operator. We are not filling unverified state cells here.
18+ or 21+ as the venue requires. Underage gambling is illegal. This page is not legal advice. Help: responsible gambling and the National Council on Problem Gambling.
